SEA Games: Cambodia brings water polo and sailing back for 2023, but bowling, shooting to miss out

With less than a year before the 2023 SEA Games in Phnom Penh, the SEA Games Federation is set to meet in a matter of weeks to finalise the list of sports and events that will be contested in the Cambodian capital. That final list for the May 5-17 event may raise some eyebrows, with a number of sports that have featured regularly in recent editions of the biennial event on the verge of missing out. At the most recent SEA Games Federation meeting at the Sokha Hotel in Phnom Penh last week (July 11-13), a provisional list of 40 sports included mainstays like athletics and aquatics, with water polo returning after missing the last edition in Hanoi in May 2022, which had been postponed by seven months due to the pandemic.

Thailand’s first monkeypox patient found after fleeing to Cambodia

A Nigerian man who went on the run after becoming Thailand’s first monkeypox case was found in Phnom Penh Saturday and taken to hospital, the Cambodian Health Ministry said. It comes the same day the World Health Organization officials in Geneva declared the monkeypox outbreak as a global health emergency on Saturday. The 27-year-old tourist — who had overstayed his visa in Thailand — was diagnosed with monkeypox in the resort city of Phuket on Monday, a Thai health official said.

Incomes dry up for farmers on Cambodia’s huge lake

Life has never been easy for farmers along Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake – the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia – and now water shortages, soil degradation and the rising costs for chemicals have added to their hardships. “Each season, the most challenging problems we farmers commonly face are a lack of finance and water,” said Reth Pheach, 50, who has land in Sa Kream commune in Kampong Thom province. Sitting under a dilapidated wooden house about 80 kilometers from the Tonle Sap Lake, he added: “In the past, we did not have water shortages. We rarely had droughts, but now the weather has become unpredictable. I don’t know why this happens.”
